Here a few moments from a presentation & book signing of AUSTIN’S ROSEWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD written by Jane.H Rivera PhD & Gilberto C. Rivera. Both authors have been neighborhood activists in Rosewood for decades. Their book is based on interviews with their neighbors, personal photographs, and information from the Austin History Center.
In AUSTIN’S ROSEWOOD NEIHBORHOOD, ( from Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series) learn about the success stories of Eastside residents despite facing obstacles and adverse living conditions due to institutional segregation and racism. The pictorial history provides accounts of a distinct community surviving based upon courage, strength & creativity. Beyond using the book as a tool to understand where Rosewood Neighborhood came from/where it’s been, it also serves as an indicator (for now and future generations) of the many unique qualities/features that need to be preserved & honored in the neighborhood.
Here’s a recording of Jane & Gilberto’s presenatation at Monkey Wrench Books. The recording was featured on (PEOPLE UNITED (produced by Allan Campbell) KOOP 91.7 FM.
IN ADDITION, GILBERTO HAS PRODUCED VIDEO DOCUMENTARIES ABOUT KEY MOMENTS IN THE AUSTIN CHICANO COMMUNITY:
